Advice for motorists
Dated: 19 Dec 2011
Police are reminding motorists to take extra care on slippery roads across the force today.
Overnight frost has led to slippery conditions on many roads with black ice in some places. The cold weather is expected to continue leading to widespread icy conditions.
Temporary Chief Inspector Sarah Pitt, Northumbria Police's Operations Department, said: "Motorists are advised that with the icy weather expected to continue the roads are potentially hazardous and this could also lead to patches of black ice.
"Drivers are advised to be aware of the conditions and moderate their speed, while taking extra care on the region's roads. They should keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front as stopping distances are longer on wet and icy roads, and they should try not to brake sharply."
