Pedal power tackles shop theft

Dated: 05 May 2012

Bikes used to tackle retail crime

Police are getting on their bikes to patrol The Galleries shopping centre in a bid to target retail theft.

Neighbourhood officers have joined forces with Gentoo and The Galleries, who have bought four mountain bikes for the team to use around the retail centre, with support from Halfords. Police are using the bikes during Operation Centurion, to carry out high visibility patrols, to stop thefts and catch offenders.

Washington Neighbourhood Inspector Paul Stewart said: "Tackling shop theft is a priority for the team and we are working with our local partners to deal effectively with it.

"Since our additional patrols began in March, we have seen a reduction of 29% in these crimes, which means 10 fewer offences reported. Several suspected shop thieves have also been arrested and enquiries are continuing.

"We're pleased that this operation has had a successful start and we are determined to continue with it.  Our message is clear, we want shop thieves to know they're not welcome in this area and have extra police patrols at the busier times."
