[View Full Size]Police are launching a new drive to remind people enjoying a night out to keep their possessions secure.
A campaign gets underway this week urging revellers to take care of their phones, purses and wallets on a night out to deter opportunist thieves - especially in the force's popular party spots.
Acting Superintendent Bruce Storey, from Newcastle Area Command, said: "This can be an issue for people enjoying an evening out in the city. Sometimes when customers have had a few drinks they realise their phone is missing and police are focusing on these opportunist thefts.
"Officers are working with members of the city's Pubwatch scheme, who are displaying posters to remind their customers to take care of their valuable possessions.
"All too often people leave expensive iPhones or Blackberrys lying alone on bar tables, or on top of handbags left open, out of their owner's sight on the floor. This makes these items an easy steal for an opportunist thief."
