Shop thieves targeted
Dated: 25 May 2012

Police have shop thieves in their sights as they continue to target offenders in South Tyneside.
Officers in West Shields and Riverside have seen a decrease in shoplifting, down by 10 offences in the last month, from 41 offences to 31, a reduction of almost a quarter.
Neighbourhood Sergeant Nick Gjorven said: "We are seeing a fall in crime after increasing patrols in affected areas using both police in uniform to deter thieves and plain clothes officers to target known offenders.
"We are also working closely with retail premises and South Shields Shop Watch which helps us to share information about active criminals with store security staff. This partnership work is effective and is helping us to catch offenders."
Persistent offenders not only face their day in court but can also be excluded from member’s stores across the town.
