Police are advising people how to beat the burglar even when they're away on holiday.

Officers from Riverside and West Shields have been tackling house burglary with extra patrols in previously affected areas.  Police have also been issuing crime prevention advice to householders which has resulted in a drop in this crime of 43%, compared to last year.

Neighbourhood Inspector Peter Sutton said: "Fortunately, the number of domestic burglaries in South Tyneside is relatively low, but they are still extremely distressing crimes.  We want to make sure we do all we can to prevent any more people falling victim.

"Almost half of all house burglaries in our areas, 42% of all house burglaries in our area, have happened in homes left insecure.  We want again to stress the importance of keeping your home safe and secure in a bid to beat the burglar."
