Investigation into death of a man

Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses after the death of a man in South Shields.

Police received a report from the ambulance service of an unconscious man in the rear lane between John Williams Street and South Fredrick Street, South Shields, shortly after 11pm on Friday, June 29.

The 31-year-old man was taken to hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

A 19-year-old woman and 27-year-old man have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in police custody.

DI Paul Woods of the Major Crime Team said: "We are trying to establish the exact circumstances which has led to this man's death which is being treated as suspicious at this time.

"Officers are in the area to provide reassurance to the community and we are conducting further enquiries."
