Man assaulted during burglary

Police are appealing for information after an assault in Sunderland.

At 7:30am this morning, Saturday September 22, a resident in Mortimer Street disturbed a man breaking into his shed.

The offender then assaulted the man with a saw , taken from the shed, before fleeing the scene.

The victim, a man in his 20s, suffered facial injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

The offender is described as being aged between 17 to 20 years old, of thin build and was wearing a hooded tracksuit.

Officers have been in the area carrying out extra patrols and speaking with local residents.
