Protest in Sunderland
Dated: 06 Oct 2012
Police were made aware of a pre-planned protest at a site at St Mark's Road, Millfield, Sunderland.
Around 200 people were involved in the demonstration involving a number of left-wing and right-wing organisations. A police operation was in place to facilitate a peaceful protest.
Despite assurances from both sides that this would be good-natured and respectful of the local communities, a number of those attending engaged in disorder and objects have been thrown.
13 arrests have been made in total. It is believed that there have been no injuries and no damage caused at this time.
A police presence remains in the area to reassure communities.
Assistant Chief Constable Steve Ashman said: "It is disappointing that a protest that was planned as peaceful has resulted in arrests.
"We have a strong police presence in the area and this will continue in order to provide reassurance to the community. We will not tolerate any sort of disorder and those seen to be committing such offences will be arrested."
