Police support community event
Dated: 11 Oct 2012
Police attended the Gateshead Older People's Assembly community safety event recently, to deliver a crime prevention message.
The Assembly supports the over 50s in the borough and provides help and a voice for older people. Officers set up a crime prevention stall at the annual general meeting held at Gateshead Civic Centre.
This supports the forcewide 'If in doubt, keep them out!' initiative, which aims to raise awareness of the problem of doorstep criminals - people who carry out distraction burglaries, such as bogus officials, high pressure doorstep salesmen and rogue traders.
Officers talked to visitors to help residents stay safe and avoid being taken in by fraudsters.
Neighbourhood Inspector Michael Robson said: "Officers talked to the members and handed out crime prevention leaflets to people with the aim to stop them being taken in by bogus callers."
