Crime prevention advice
Dated: 19 Oct 2012
Police in Gateshead are asking people to help crackdown on crime by keeping belongings locked away.
Officers continue to tackle bike theft in the area and have made a number of arrests. A number of suspected stolen bikes have also been recovered and are hoped to be reunited with their owners.
However, the public are also being asked for their help to prevent them becoming a victim of crime.
Inspector Michael Robson said: "We are tackling this issue and will continue to take action on those committing such crimes.
"The public can use some basic crime prevention techniques to make it more difficult for opportunist thieves to strike.
"It's always worth noting any serial numbers or frame numbers or marking the bikes in some way. This can help officers return it should it be stolen and recovered.
"Ensure your belongings are locked away and secure and where possible register your belongings on a property website such as immobilise.com.
"You can also attend one of our bike marking events which we regularly advertise on our website."
Don't attract opportunist thieves - always keep your bikes and belongings locked away and out of sight.
