Advice for motorists after heavy rain

Dated: 14 Dec 2012

Police are reminding motorists to drive with care after heavy rainfall across the region.

This afternoon, Friday December 14, Northumbria Police received warnings from the Environment Agency about high tides, strong winds and potential flooding in some areas.

Extra officers were on patrol in the affected areas and as of 5:30pm there had been no flooding and no serious issues reported.

Due to the heavy rain, police had reports of standing water on main and side roads across the whole of the force area.

If rain continues into the night this could worsen and motorists should drive carefully and according to conditions.

Drivers are urged to allow extra travel time, use their lights appropriately, moderate their speed and maintain a safe distance from any vehicles in front.

Drivers should never take risks and drive through areas that have been flooded.

Residents are urged to check local media and agency websites for the latest information or follow @Northumbriapol on twitter.

People seeking advice about flooding in their area can ring the Environment Agency Floodline on 0845 9881188 or visit  www.environment-agency.gov.uk
