Between roughly 8.30pm and 10.15pm on Tuesday, December 18, a 15-year-old girl was raped on a piece of waste ground between Park Close and Gloucester Terrace in Elswick.

The rapist, a male in his late teens, described as approximately 5ft 8ins tall, dark skin, slim build and wearing a black leather jacket and a black fleece hat, approached the girl on Elswick Road and threatened her with a knife before conducting a sustained assault on her over the course of around an hour and a half.

Earlier this week officers located a 4-inch wooden-handled kitchen knife at the scene.

Police are now particularly keen to trace a member of the public who may have seen the offender and the victim at the scene and who may have mistaken them for a couple.

Detective Chief Inspector Gary Hetherington said: "We have a dedicated team of officers and staff working on this investigation, using every tool at our disposal to catch the rapist.

"We are studying extensive CCTV footage, undertaking forensic tests and working with the family and local community. Although most people will now be looking forward to a Christmas off work, our team will remain fully resourced and staffed until this crime is solved.

"This was a particularly nasty offence, all the more so because of how unusual it is, and I would like to again reassure the community that we have extra officers on patrol in the area and that these will continue over the holidays."

Anyone who was in the area at the time of the attack or who has information about it is asked to contact police on the 101 non-emergency number.
