Teenager charged following city centre assault

A teenager has been charged following an assault in Newcastle city centre.

At 3.25am, on Friday, March 1, police received a report of a disturbance outside The Gate in Newcastle city centre. A 24-year-old man suffered head injuries and was taken to hospital were he remains in a serious condition.

A 16-year-old boy has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent. He appeared before Newcastle Magistrates' Court on Saturday, March 2.

Two men aged 24 and 19 arrested on suspicion of affray and a 23-year-old man arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm have all been bailed pending further enquiries.

A 22-year-old man arrested on suspicion of affray will receive no further police action.

Detective Chief Inspector Ged Noble said: "The investigation continues to establish what happened.

"The Gate is a busy location and there would have been people in the area who may have seen what happened and we want them to get in contact."
