The annual Blaydon Race will take place on Monday, June 9, and more than 4,000 runners are expected to compete.

The 5.9 mile road race will start at the east end of Collingwood Street in Newcastle city centre at 7.15pm and will finish at Shibdon Road Playing Fields in Blaydon at approximately 9pm.

Competitors will assemble in the Bigg Market area from 5pm onwards and a number of roads will be closed to facilitate the race.

As this is likely to cause serious congestion in Newcastle city centre, Scotswood and Gateshead, motorists are advised to avoid these areas if at all possible.

Chief Superintendent Andy McDyer said: "This is a very popular event which draws large crowds who enthusiastically support the competitors. This is a highlight for many local runners who enjoy the race through the heart of Newcastle and Gateshead.

"Officers have been working with the race organisers to help people enjoy the event while aiming to minimise the disruption to commuters and other road users where possible."
