Crime Statistics Commentary

Last month the main focus of our work was on robbery, with six offences recorded, and burglary as we had 17 reported offences. Of these burglaries six were house burglaries the others occurred in sheds, garages and other premises.

Much work has been carried by the Neighbourhood Policing Team in conjunction with the response shift to deal with robbery offences. Officers have concentrated on crime prevention as well as targeting those believed responsible for committing crime. There have been two arrests and individuals are currently remanded in custody awaiting trial.

The level of house burglaries has been very low and we are determined to continue reducing these offences further. Our ongoing investigation work and focus of enforcement working with our partners is having a positive effect.

There has been another successful conviction with an offender receiving a 2 ½ year prison sentence for burglary - please see our section on the Northumbria Police website for further details. This area remains a high priority despite the low numbers and is being closely monitored.

An emerging problem has been identified with youth anti-social behaviour. To combat this resources have been redistributed and people reporting this type of incident will receive an enhanced service from the Neighbourhood Team.

We are also looking at developing “hotspot” areas and will work with partners to look at the offenders, locations and reasons behind these increases. Work targeted at off-licences selling alcohol to under 18 is on-going, and anyone found breaking the law will be prosecuted.

The Central area of Gateshead continues to become an even safer place to live with reported crimes in the sector having been reduced by 270 compared to the same time last year.
