Youngsters warned of construction site dangers

Dated: 17 Jul 2012

Emergency services are issuing a stern warning to youngsters to keep out of construction sites, including the former Gateshead College site, on Durham Road.

The former college site has been targeted by vandals in recent months and following a series of fires and concern from local residents, Northumbria Police with Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service  are reminding young people that the semi-derelict site, and all construction sites, are extremely dangerous and not places to enter.

The site has been attracting youngsters using it as a playground. But new site owners Miller Homes, who took possession of the former college last week, have put new security measures in place to stop this irresponsible behaviour.

Inspector Michael Robson of the Central Neighbourhood Team says the police and fire service are now working with Miller Homes to ensure there is no further trespassing by local youngsters.
