We asked…

During 2011, as part of Operation WAYS, we received feedback from the Community in the Felling area who were concerned about the use of Class A Drugs primarily Heroin in and around the Crowhall Lane area.

You were concerned regarding the signs of drug related activities being obvious in the neighbourhood and in particular two drug related deaths in a local pay to use toilet situated in the shopping precinct. Similarly residents at a nearby tower block expressed concerns regarding the use of stairwells by drug users to administer their drugs leaving used needles and paraphernalia behind, and generally using the stairwells as a communal drug enclave.

We did...

In January 2012 we decided to engage with our partners using a multi-agency approach to resolve the problem. This work is ongoing and will result in an action plan being devised which will focus on tackling the problem in a coordinated and systematic way and from a number of dimensions.

We have already had liaison with the local authority at a senior level which has resulted in removal of the toilet which was seen by many as a 'drugs den'.

Ongoing consultation with our partners is in evidence via local tasking meetings which are minuted and as a result of the recent meeting on 9th January 2012 we have created a log of visits by police to Cromwell Towers where we will assess the level of anti social behaviour and drug related activities on a daily basis, and in conjunction with the Council CCTV operators attempt to identify non bona fide visitors who we can take positive action against to prevent them gaining access to the building, in the first instance, with a view to referring those confirmed drug users to partners to look at the circumstances surrounding their drug misuse.
