Crime Statistics Commentary
Officers have received several reports of thefts from parked vehicles in the area.
In several cases, the vehicles have been left insecure which makes them an easy target for opportunist criminals.
In response to this, high visibility patrols have been carried out supported by plain clothes patrols at specific times in identified areas.
Where vehicles have been found insecure or with valuables on display, crime prevention advice has been given to owners.
Advice to car owners is always check that you have secured your vehicle, never leave valuables on display and always take them with you when you leave your vehicle.
The message is Lock it, secure it, keep it!
Since the beginning of the financial year house burglary offences have remained at a similar level to this time last year in the Outer West. The vast majority of those houses targeted were left insecure and entry to them was made easy for the opportunist thief.
With the onset of light nights and warmer weather householders may be tempted to leave doors and windows open. The message is simple - Don’t be a victim - secure your property.
If you are going out do remember to lock all doors and windows to your homes. If you are enjoying your garden, make sure doors and windows you can’t see are secured and locked. Place car keys out of sight.
House burglary will always be a priority for the Outer West Neighbourhood Team and we are using a range of tactics to tackle offences of burglary. These include high visibility patrols and operations to keep thieves at bay, identifying and targeting key offenders, as well as carrying out search warrants at addresses used by known offenders.
The Outer West area of Gateshead is a safe place to live and reported crimes in the sector have been reduced by 191 crimes last year.
