Neighbourhood priorities

Northumbria Police aims to meet our commitment to you.

The following Neighbourhood priorities relate to your area:

January 11, 2012: Burglary Dwelling in Benwell Terraces

What you told us

Police have received an increasing number of dwelling burglaries and burglary other than dwellings being reported within the area of Benwell occurring mainly in the afternoon and overnight.

Entry has been gained to houses and flats through insecure windows and doors and property has been stolen. Items stolen include easily transportable property such as cash, jewellery, laptops and small electrical items.

What we are doing about it

As a result, Operation Rooster was implemented with increased visibility and plain clothes patrols being conducted by police officers and community support officers.

It has also involved targeting known offenders which has resulted in some significant arrests and the recovery of a substantial amount of property.

A dedicated team of officers has been formed to concentrate on this burglary issue.

'Stinger' properties, which are unoccupied houses or flats, controlled by the police, and fitted with covert CCTV have been utilised extensivelty across the policing sector.

To date, there has been a 100% success rate with the arrest and subsequent charge of all suspects.

Keeping you informed

Police rely upon information provided by members of the public and urge everyone to report any suspicious activity to us or if they have been offered items for sale which they suspect to be stolen.

Despite this current burglary trend, the operation has proved to have been very successful within a short period, resulting in a number of arrests and a reduction in burglaries. A substantial amount of property has also been recovered.

As entry to the property has often been gained via insecure doors and windows, householders are encouraged to ensure that houses are secure at all times, even when they are in the house. Timers for lights should be used as the dark nights have drawn in and property and presents should not be left on display.
