Neighbourhood priorities

Northumbria Police aims to meet our commitment to you.

The following Neighbourhood priorities relate to your area:

1. May 2012: Pedal cycle theft in Byker and Walker

"What you told us"

There has been an increase in the number of reports of pedal cycle thefts - mainly from lampposts and barriers used to secure the bike if visiting the area or popping in to local shops.

"What we are doing about it"

The Newcastle East Neighbourhood Policing Team has formed a cycle-theft team, conducting high-visibility and plain-clothed patrols in the area on foot, in cars and on pedal cycles.  Operations have been initiated, using various police techniques to identify bicycle thieves and those who go on to handle the stolen property.
Numerous bike owners have been spoken to and given crime prevention advice about the quality of the locks they are using and to secure their bikes in well-lit public areas if being used in the area and a bicycle rack is not available.

"Keeping you informed"

The Neighbourhood Policing Team has arrested a number of offenders for their suspected involvement in stealing pedal cycles.  This has resulted in a large number of bikes being found during house searches; and a number offenders being charged to court.

Members of the public are reminded to identify their bikes; and if buying new bikes are encouraged to purchase from reputable dealers as stolen bikes are often sold on through the internet.

Neighbourhood Police Officers and Community Support Officers are keen to obtain email contact addresses from residents in order to keep communities up to date regarding local incidents and current news.  Consent forms are available from your local neighbourhood policing team for your details to be added to the Byker & Walker Community Messaging List.

2. May 2012: Youth anti-social behaviour in Byker

"What you told us"

Residents have raised concerns about youths causing anti-social behaviour within the Byker area.

"What we are doing about it"

The Newcastle East Neighbourhood Policing Team is conducting high-visibility patrols in the areas to assist in alleviating the problem and providing public reassurance.  Northumbria Police are also working in partnership with Your Homes Newcastle Housing Officers and their Housing Anti-Social Behaviour Enforcement Team; Neighbourhood Wardens and Environmental Health Officers.  Together individuals are being identified and referrals made to the most appropriate agency.

There are frequent visits being made to off-licences to ensure compliance with laws relating to selling alcohol to juveniles.  Alcohol seizures will be used to reduce offending behaviour and direction to leave notices issued where appropriate (banning an individual from the area for up to 48 hours – failure to comply will result in arrest).

All youths will be dispersed/returned home and positive action taken regarding any offences wherever possible.  All youths stopped and spoken to in respect of anti-social behaviour have letters sent to their parents to advise them of the problem.  Information is also shared with Your Homes Newcastle who, in turn, remind residents of their tenancy agreement and take action where appropriate.

May 2012. Metal Theft

"What you told us"

Residents and businesses have raised concerns about metal thefts across the area.

"What we are doing about it"

Itinerant Collectors are required to be registered as such with the Local Authority and in addition are required to hold a Waste Carrier’s Permit issued by the Environment Agency.

It is our intention to:
• To reduce offences and identify offenders or persons suspected of such offences.
• To stop and check all vehicles identified as collecting scrap.
• To arrest offenders and deal with them in an expedient manner ensuring positive outcomes in all cases.
• To visit the scrap yards regularly in order to deter criminal activity and support legitimate business.

During April the Neighbourhood Policing Team conducted an operation in connection with VOSA to target vehicles involved in metal thefts.  A number of vehicles were stopped and checked during this operation.

A local male has been charged with theft of taps and copper piping stolen from Christ Church, Walker.

"Keeping you informed"

The sector continues to account for one third of the metal thefts in the Newcastle area.  Concerns lie with the itinerant scrap metal dealers, who constantly trawl the streets of Newcastle East regarding their possible involvement in some of these instances of metal theft.

Please use the website to contact us:
