Neighbourhood priorities
Northumbria Police aims to meet our commitment to you.
The following Neighbourhood priorities relate to your area:
1. Youth Anti-Social Behaviour
What you told us
Incident analysis of the Byker area shows that youth Anti-Social Behaviour is still occuring.
What we are doing about it
Northumbria Police are working together in partnership with Your Homes Newcastle Housing Officers and their Housing Anti-Social Behaviour and Enforcement Team; Neighbourhood Wardens and Environmental Health Officers. Together with high visibility patrols, individuals are being identified and referrals made to the most appropriate agency.
Keeping you informed
The measures detailed above have led to a reduction in the number of reports of disorder being received. These and other issues concerning local residents can be discussed with officers at Ward Committee meetings and at tenants and residents groups. Details of these meetings can be obtained through the Northumbria Police or Newcastle City Council websites.
All youths stopped and spoken to in respect of anti-social behaviour have letters sent to their parents to advise them of the problem. Information is also shared with Your Homes Newcastle who, in turn, remind residents of their tenancy agreement and take action where appropriate.
Neighbourhood Police Officers and Community Support Officers are keen to obtain email contact addresses from residents in order to keep our communities up to date regarding local incidents and current news. Consent forms are available from your local neighbourhood policing team for your details to be added to the Byker & Walker Community Messaging List.
2. Metal Theft
What you told us
Crime Analysis of the Byker and Walker area shows that Metal Thefts are still occuring, particularly in the Walker area.
What we are doing about it
Over the past three to four years the price of metal has risen heavily and as a result the metal theft crimes have increased during that time. The Byker and Walker area has three scrapyards who offer very competitive prices therefore it is believed many travel to the area to sell their wares. Thieves are believed to use all forms of travel (foot, bike, taxi, car, van).
In November the Walker Neighbourhood Policing Team conducted an operation together with personnel from Environmental Health where the three yards were visited during the operation; the yards searched and vehicles checked for waste/metals. This particular approach will be run on various days in the run up to Christmas.
Another operation ran in November in the Byker and Walker area with partner agencies VOSA, Customs and Council Enforcement to stop vehicles during a tried and tested operation stopping various motor vehicles carrying scrap metal travelling in and through the east end. All agencies have their own particular powers which when put together work very effectively.
Keeping you informed
Results of operations and increased patrols have resulted in arrests for theft of metal; and various waste carrier offences to be pursued by the council enforcement team who will also link with the benefit fraud team. The recent arrests of two main offenders, who work independently of one another, resulted in a reduction in metal thefts while they were remanded in custody.
