Crime Statistics Commentary

In February there were 26 burglaries in the sector.  This increased to 30 in March. Vacant properties are being targeted in the locality and the thieves often seek out metal pipe work and central heating fittings.

We are working with local housing providers to increase security in people’s homes and encourage residents to ensure there are lights on in their house at dusk. We are increasing patrols in residential areas and trying to deter metal thieves by working with local scrap metal dealers and council enforcement officers to make it more difficult to transport and dispose of stolen metal items.

There were 71 reports of theft in March compared to 37 in February. Again this is mostly attributable to thefts of metal and bikes. The increase is largely explained by a spate of theft of garden taps which we are currently investigating.

As the evenings get lighter we always anticipate an increase in calls about anti-social behaviour. There were 406 such incidents in March compared to 273 in February.  The largest increase was in the Byker Wall area where there was an increase of 70 incidents. To tackle this problem, the Newcastle East Neighbourhood Policing Team has increased the number of patrols around the key areas at times when we have been told that problems are happening. We are also dealing robustly with people who repeatedly behave in an ant-social manner.  We rely on the help of we get from our local communities to tell us where they are having problems and to give us any information which would help us tackle the issue.
