Metal Thefts in Byker and Walker.

We did…

The sector continues to account for one third of the metal thefts in the Newcastle area.  Concerns lie with the itinerant scrap metal dealers, who constantly trawl the streets of Newcastle East regarding their possible involvement in some of these instances of metal theft.

Itinerant Collectors are required to be registered as such with the Local Authority and in addition are required to hold a Waste Carrier’s Permit issued by the Environment Agency.

It is our intention to:
• To reduce offences and identify offenders or persons suspected of such offences.
• To stop and check all vehicles identified as collecting scrap.
• To arrest offenders and deal with them in an expedient manner ensuring positive outcomes in all cases.
• To visit the scrap yards regularly in order to deter criminal activity and support legitimate business.

Currently there are eleven pubs and clubs in Byker and Walker signed up to the Pubwatch Scheme:
Butchers Arms
The Raby
Jacksons
The Grace Inn
Byker and Heaton Union Club (key club)
Peggy Sues
PTE Club
Stags Head
The Railway Hotel

Since the Pubwatch Scheme has been in place, five banning orders have been given to persons who have been involved in crime or serious disorder in a pub within the scheme.  These banning orders vary between 6 and 12 months.

• At Pubwatch meetings members share information about potential troublemakers, banned drinkers or anything else which will help make the area’s licensed premises safer.
• Each pub has a radio linking them to each other and the police.
• Under the scheme, anybody found committing crime or causing disorder in the member pubs will be barred from all of them for anywhere between six months and two years.

Cannabis cultivation on Midway, Walker

We did…

Search Warrant executed at an address on Midway following several calls from residents concerned that cannabis was being grown.

• Two arrests were made at the address for the cultivation of cannabis.  All equipment for such cultivation was removed from the address.
• The relationship between residents and the local Neighbourhood Policing Teams is such that important information is exchanged and effective steps are taken with positive results.
