Keep thieves locked out
Dated: 15 Apr 2012
[View Full Size]Police are urging residents in Newcastle to shut out burglars by making sure they lock their doors.
The advice comes after a number of burglaries where thieves have gained entry to unsecured properties.
Chief Inspector Steve Barron of Newcastle Area Command is asking people to protect their property and lock thieves out.
Chief Inspector Barron said: "We have had a number of incidents lately where burglars have gained access to property simply by entering through an unlocked door or window. It is particularly alarming the number of people who do not secure their homes over night.
"We know that some opportunist thieves are going house-to-house to see if doors are unlocked. This is a particular problem in the Jesmond and Heaton areas.
"Victims who do not secure their properties not only have to suffer the fact that somebody has entered their home without their knowledge but also suffer the loss of their belongings, which often can't be claimed on insurance due to the property not being secured.
"Last year in Newcastle the number of burglary victims was significantly reduced and the number of burglaries detected was increased.
"This was achieved through some sustained police activity with support from the public. These efforts are continuing and burglary is down in the area from the same period last year but in the Jesmond and Heaton areas there has been a slight increase in recent days so I ask people to be vigilant.
"If people could just spend those extra few seconds checking they have locked their windows and doors we can prevent these thieves taking an easy opportunity.
"I do warn these criminals - we have arrested and convicted a number of burglars over the last year and our efforts are continuing. If you're a burglar we will catch you and the courts will ensure that you are punished."
