Neighbourhood priorities

Northumbria Police aims to meet our commitment to you.

The following Neighbourhood priorities relate to your area:

December 7, 2011: Burglary dwellings

What you told us

Crime analysis of the Jesmond and Heaton area shows that burglary dwellings are still occurring, especially in South Jesmond and South Heaton which has a high proportion of student inhabitants.

Since the start of January Northumbria Police have implemented numerous initiatives to combat this issue.

What we are doing about it

Police are working closely with our partner agencies and intelligence is being gathered in order to target offenders and to deploy resources including specialist resources i.e. dog section, mounted section and motor patrols.

A Burglary Team has been created to concentrate solely on the issue.  The Team consists of a Detective Sgt, 5 PC's and an Intelligence Officer to investigate burglaries in the Newcastle East Area.

Operation Moonlight has been initiated whereby any vulnerable properties are identified and the occupants are identified and given crime prevention advice.

Stop and search powers will be used robustly to deal effectively with those who are potential offenders.

Three males have been arrested during November from the Heation area and are currently on bail for burglaries in the Jesmond/Heation area.

In addition to this several persons throughout Newcastle have been arrested for Handling Stolen Goods with numerous high value items being recovered and returned to their original owners.


December 7th, 2011: Theft from motor vehicles

What you told us

Crime analysis of the Jesmond and Heaton area shows that theft from motor vehicles is still occurring, especially in Jesmond and South Heaton. These crimes are committed by opportunistic thieves who see property left on display in vehicles, especially sat-navs and other electrical devices.

Since the start of January, Northumbria Police have implemented numerous initiatives to combat this issue.

What we are doing about it

High profile and plain clothes patrols are taking place with officers directed to hot spot areas.

Operation Sunshine has been implemented with officers identifying vehicles with property on display and contacting owners to give crime prevention advice.

During the month of November, resources in the Jesmond and Heaton area identified 42 vehicles left unattended with valuables on display. The registered keepers of these vehicles have been contacted and given crime prevention advice in relation to vehicle crime.

During November 3 persons have been arrested in connection with Theft fom Motor Vehicles in the Heaton Area, they are currently on Police Bail pending further enquiries being conducted.

Due to this proactive approach to crime prevention and various operations and taskings in the Jesmond and Heaton area, we have been able to reduce offences of Theft from Motor Vehicles by over 50% compared to the same period last year.


October 1, 2011: Student anti social behaviour

What you told us

Incident analysis of the Jesmond area shows that student anti social behaviour is still occurring, especially in south and west Jesmond.  The main complaints relate to noise nuisance linked to student accommodation and transient noise caused by students returning to properties late at night/early morning.

What we are doing about it

Since the start of September 2011, Northumbria Police have implemented numerous initiatives to combat this issue.

Operation Oak anti social behaviour police patrols during hotspot times (11pm and 4am) and locations (south and west Jesmond) every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday (5am finish).

Premises have been identified and visited by police and partner agencies (Environmental Health)

We have increased high visibility patrols

Referrals are done to Universities to highlight issues and prevent further occurrences.

Keeping you informed

Newcastle residents will benefit from Night-Watch, a new night-time noise service operated by Newcastle City Council.  This noise service will deal with night time noise problems.  Night-Watch operates 7 days a week between 08.00pm and 04.00am.  If you are experiencing noisy neighbours please phone 0300 1000 101.

Between the two agencies responses a total of 128 students have been spoken to in the month of November, 101 receiving a first warning letters or verbal warnings.  Twenty One students receiving a second warning in relation to their conduct, six students recieved section 80 notics from Environmental Health.

All student details are passed on to their relevant university for their attention.
