Neighbourhood priorities

Northumbria Police aims to meet our commitment to you.

The following Neighbourhood priorities relate to your area:

1. May 2012: Theft of mobile phones from people in crowded bars within the city centre particularly from women’s handbags.

"What you told us"

Theft of mobile phones this year has represented a significant proportion of the crime reported in the city centre and is particularly prevalent in the evening at weekends.

"What we are doing about it"

We are addressing this issue by having high visibility patrols in the vicinity of the bars where the majority of the thefts occur to target the known offenders. Also we have deployed plain clothes officers within the bars that have high numbers of mobile phone thefts.
A dedicated team of investigative officers are gathering intelligence and evidence to put offenders before the court and recover people’s property.

"Keeping you informed"

A number of offenders have been arrested and charged to court for stealing over 100 mobile phones. We have so far recovered and returned £15,000 worth of mobile phones to their owners.

The Neighbourhood Policing Team will keep the community updated through Partners and Communities Together (PACT) meetings. For more information on the meetings contact the team on 101 ext 64235 or look at the Events page under Newcastle City.

2. May 2012 - Disorderly behaviour by street drinkers around the Monument

What you told us

There has been an increase in the number of reports of disorderly behaviour by "street drinkers" around the Monument area.

What we are doing about it

Extra patrols are being carried out in the area, disorderly behaviour is being challenged and the enforcement of by laws banning public drinking in the city enforced.  Evidence is being collated against our most problematic street drinking offenders with a view to implementing diversionary tactics or if required taking more positive action such as ASBO's.

Keeping you informed

Our most prolific offenders have been identified and we are currently working with partners to plan a sustainable response and ensure the propblem of street drinking is rectified.

3. May 2012 - Shoplifting is becoming an increasing problem in the city.

What you told us

Shoplifting is a real problem for retailers in the current economic climate.

What we are doing about it

Following the success of our Christmas Cracker Campaign which targeted known shoplifters in the city we have implemented another operation along the same lines where we target known thieves before they get the opportunity to steal.

Keeping you informed

The operation has been welcomed by city retailers and will continue for the foreseeable future.
