Neighbourhood priorities

Northumbria Police aims to meet our commitment to you.

The following Neighbourhood priorities relate to your area:

January 2012 - Acquisitive Crime within the City Centre

What you told us

As a result of monitoring crime trends and patterns and reports from the public, one of the issues that has been raised relates to the incidents of acquisitive crime within the City Centre, largely in the form of theft of unattended property in bars and theft from the person.

What we are doing about it

In order to tackle these issues a number of different approaches are being undertaken.  Officers are working with licensed premises to highlight the importance of not leaving personal belongings unattended in bars and clubs and to raise awareness of opportunistic crime. Further operations are planned throughout January to target and reduce such offences within the city centre.

Officers are also continuing to promote the ‘Keys, Money, Phone….’ Campaign in order to increase awareness of personal safety.

Although Newcastle City Centre is a safe place to be opportunists may still steal your property if it is left unattended, please look after all your belongings at all times.

Tackling Illegal Street Traders

We became aware of an increase in illegal street traders around The Gate complex of the city centre and tackled this issue by undertaking a joint operation with the local authority.

We successfully identified a number of these traders and seized a significant quantity of items and the traders have been summonsed to court regarding these offences.

We will continue to work in partnership with the local authority to address any issue which causes an impact on the community.

Keeping you informed

We aim to work with the local community at all times and value what is important to you.  We welcome any feedback or issues that you have concerning your community.
