Crime Statistics Commentary

In Newcastle City centre, we have seen an increase in bike thefts with the majority having had the chain cut with bolt croppers.

As such we would advise people to spend about 20% of their bikes value on a lock such as a D-lock rather than a cable type lock.

We are targeting the areas where pedal cycles are being stolen and using CCTV to identify offenders.

Theft of personal belongings in crowded bars, particularly mobile phones from handbags, continues to be a problem within the city centre.

We have been gathering intelligence and evidence against a number of offenders who have now been arrested and charged to court.

These offenders have been responsible for stealing over 100 mobile phones within Newcastle city centre and they are awaiting sentence from the courts.

During the operation we recovered a number of stolen mobile phones valued at £15,000 which have now been returned to their owners.
