Crime Statistics Commentary
All crime in the Wallsend sector is down by 209 offences compared to the same period last year, a reduction of 9.6%. The crime detection rate is 52.8%, which means that over half of all reported offences are being detected.
Violent crime is down by 19 offences and the overall reduction for the reporting year is 3.8%, again in comparison to the same period last year. Offences have increased in March by 19 offences compared to last month.
Officers have also focused and will continue to focus on public transport areas and around licensed premises, using police powers and preventative measures to deal with individuals before trouble starts, such as the issuing of directions to leave notices in the area. We have made the Metro stations and system within the sector a policing priority in order to combat violence and disorder on the system and provide reassurance to the community who use the Metro. We will also undertake further intensive licensing visits to public houses in the area to ensure they are being run in a responsible manner.
Burglary to homes remains a priority within the Wallsend sector. In March, we have seen a continued reduction in burglary to homes which follows the trend we have had in reducing burglary over the last few months. There have now been 8.7% fewer burglaries compared to last year. Clearly any burglary committed is one too many and our officers and staff are working hard to continue to reduce it further again. We require the assistance of the community however in doing so.
Burglary to sheds and garages has increased over the last 12 months with 11 more offences being reported. Many of these offences can be prevented by ensuring sheds and garages are secured using good quality locks.
Vehicle crime continues to fall following a peak in October last year. In March, there were 2 more offences than in February, however, overall vehicle crime has been reduced by 10.1% this year.
It is vitally important that people keep their homes and cars locked, never leaving valuable items on show. Much of this type of crime is opportunistic and by making yourself a harder target, the number of crimes can be reduced. Please contact the Neighbourhood Policing Team for crime prevention advice.
In Wallsend there has been a decrease in anti-social behaviour with a 15.3% reduction this year. Youth anti-social behaviour has increased in March, there were 48 more calls of anti-social behaviour than in February .The team has increased the number of patrols around the key areas at the times when we have been told problems are happening and this has proved successful. Specific operations have been set up with North Tyneside Council Trading Standards to target off licences selling alcohol to underage youths and to target adults who supply alcohol to young people .This has been identified as a policing priority for the Wallsend sector.
