Purse theft

Dated: 22 Feb 2012

Police are reminding people to make sure they keep their credit cards and PIN numbers separate after an incident in Whitley Bay when both were stolen.

Officers are investigating after a purse was stolen from a 51-year-old woman at 2.45pm on Tuesday, February 21, when she was shopping in Morrison's on Hillheads Road in Whitley Bay. The woman had left her PIN number in her purse with her bank cards and thieves have used the cards at a cashpoint and stolen cash from her account.

Police are appealing for witnesses for anyone who may have seen the theft of the purse.

Neighbourhood Sergeant Mal Wallace said: "This is a timely reminder about the dangers of keeping your bank cards and PIN numbers together in your purse or wallet. If they are then stolen, this makes it easy for thieves to use your cards and PIN number to steal cash.

"People are also reminded to keep their purse secure in a zipped or closed bag and to report anyone acting suspiciously to police straightaway."
