Crime Statistics Commentary

Crime within the Whitley Bay area has reduced by 15.3% for the period April 2011 to March 2012. This means there are 306 fewer victims of crime. At the same time we have detected 55% of all reported crime. These results have been achieved through close work with our partners within North Tyneside Council and with the assistance of our local community.

The Virtual Neighbourhood Watch Schemes in Northumberland Park, West Allotment and Shiremoor areas continue to grow and are proving very effective in reducing crimes of Burglary in the area. The scheme has now been extended to the Marden and Cullercoats area. Leaflets are being distributed inviting residents to participate in the scheme.

All members of the public are encouraged to think about their home security and consider measures such as alarm systems, window locks and property marking. Remember to report anything you think is suspicious – it is such assistance from the community within Whitley Bay that has contributed to our crime reduction

Reports of anti-social behaviour for the period April 2011 to March 2012 have shown a reduction of 16.5% with 592 less incidents. Criminal damage for the same period has reduced by 32% with 137 less reports of damage. Much of this has been achieved through such initiatives as Operation Dredge which is a targeted operation to tackle seasonal crime and disorder around Cullercoats Bay. This operation is being repeated this year and has already resulted in the arrest of three people concerned in alcohol related disorder within the Bay. Your local policing team are determined to maintain Cullercoats Bay as a place that all members of the community can enjoy.
