Crime Statistics Commentary

Members of the local community in Bedlington should be reassured that the police and their partners are dealing with crime and anti-social behaviour related matters in a positive and effective manner.  This is demonstrated by the fact that the detection rate for crimes stands at over 53% which means that over half of all crimes are detected in the Bedlington area.

In Bedlington during the month of March there were six reports of burglary in total. This is a decrease of seven offences from the previous month.  Two of these offences of burglary have already been detected with offenders being identified and positively disposed of through the criminal justice system.

Investigations are continuing into the other offences. Work is also ongoing between police, partners and the community in relation to crime prevention matters.

Burglary is a neighbourhood priority and extra attention is being focussed on this type of crime. There are no patterns in this offending and the police recommend that members of the public take the following steps to protect their homes:

  • Keep windows and doors locked, even if you are at home

  • Consider fitting an alarm

  • Don’t hide spare keys outside or in reach of the letterbox

Incidents of violent crime have remained stable this period with 17 offences.  Residents should be reassured that in such offences the offender is usually known to the victim and random attacks are extremely rare. The majority of these types of offences are detected and positive action taken with the offender.  These incidents include low level assaults arising from domestic violence incidents, neighbour disputes, breach of restraining orders and assaults on police officers. In the majority of these incidents, offenders are known and crimes detected.  It is extremely unusual for offences of this nature to occur where parties are not known to each other and the public should not be concerned about their personal safety regarding unprovoked assaults.

Incidents of vehicle crime have also remained steady with three offences this period. There is no particular pattern to the offences. The fact that the figure has decreased can be attributed to the increased attention given by Police to this type of offence, focussing their efforts on targeting offenders, executing search warrants in disruption activity and providing crime prevention advice to the public.

Further crime prevention advice can be obtained from the Northumbria Police website, www.northumbria.police.uk.

Criminal Damage has decreased by nine offences during this period.  These are random vandalism type of offences with no discernable pattern.

Theft – Shoplifting has remained steady with only six offences this period. Shoplifting remains a Neighbourhood Priority and extra attention is being focused on this type of offending. Crime Prevention advice will be given by officers to stores in the local area and known offenders will be robustly targeted.  Offenders for this type of crime are almost always identified and they will face court action as a result of their offending.

Members of the community should be reassured that where offences are reported, Police and their partners will strive to locate and deal with offenders.
Officers rely on local members of the public providing information and assistance which allows the officers to direct their attention and focus on the offences and issues which affect the Community.

Bedlington remains a safe place to live and work, members of the public should not worry about their personal safety whilst going about their normal day to day activities.
Robust action is taken around any violent crime issues, the NPT work very closely with partners around any identified issues, and we engage with communities to address any problems. We rely on local residents / communities to tell us of any emerging problems so that we can get involved at an early stage. We also rely heavily on the eyes and ears of the community in relation to ongoing issues.
Particular attention is paid to repeat victims and those vulnerable members of society.  Extra support and assistance is available from the Police and partners for such members of the community.

Anti Social Behaviour continues to be an area where a significant amount of Policing attention is focussed as we are aware how much of an impact it can have on people’s lives.  Officers are effectively tackling this problem and have invested a great deal of time in dealing with complaints of Anti Social Behaviour.  There has been an increase in anti social behaviour incidents this period. This can be attributed to the unseasonably warm weather in March and lighter nights.  During the summer months specific operations will be in place to target Anti Social Behaviour.  Officers have used information provided by the local community which is effective and vital when dealing with Anti Social Behaviour. Officers continue to work hard to tackle ASB and disorder the community.

The local community are encouraged to contact the Police to let staff know where patrols should be focussed.  The Neighbourhood Policing Team has increased patrols in key areas at relevant times.  Any information that the public can give us to tackle problems of this nature is extremely valuable.

The Neighbourhood Policing Team are also working closely with management of both on and off licensed premises in the area to address any issues regarding links to Anti Social Behaviour and alcohol related disorder and nuisance.

Officers at Bedlington are committed to providing a quality service to the community of Bedlington.  Hard work is ongoing with police and partners as described above, the detection rate for offences is excellent and we will continue to work to reduce the amount of Anti Social Behaviour and crime, offering maximum reassurance to those people living and working within Bedlington.

Members of the Community in Bedlington are encouraged to check the local media for details of the Community Messaging scheme which is being set up in the Bedlington area.  Community Messaging allows members of the public to receive information from their local Neighbourhood Policing Team regarding current local trends, crime patterns and appeals.  These messages are sent out instantly by email, text and voicemail, more information can be found on the Northumbria Police Website.
