Crime Statistics Commentary
The Berwick sector experienced an increase in anti-social behaviour during March. A seasonal increase was magnified by the excellent weather in the early spring. Information was gathered from communities to identify the key problem areas. The neighbourhood teams and 24/7 shifts joined forces and conducted patrols in key areas where they targeted known offenders. The information gathered during those patrols is being collated by the area command LMAP team. The information will then be shared with partners from housing and drug/alcohol teams to provide a joint response to manage the offenders. We are already receiving positive feedback from those communities which were most affected.
Crime levels decreased in March. Burglaries had been higher than normal throughout preceding months so an area command Burglary Suppression Group has been set up to review information, intelligence and activities aimed at dealing with burglary. In March, burglaries in Berwick were reduced from ten to four. Officers are tasked every shift to conduct Operation Coin which requires them to stop and check any moving vehicle which may be carrying criminals or stolen goods. On a daily basis officers are tasked to carry out Farm Watch patrols which incorporate visits to farms and industries in the rural areas. Subjects who have been and are believed to be actively involved in criminal activity are being monitored, stopped and checked to disrupt their criminal behaviour.
Crime is down in Berwick due to the teamwork carried put by all of its police and staff. The targeting of offenders and tasking of officers to focus their activity in key areas is preventing crime. Evidence collated in this process is being shared with partners at the council, health service and support groups to identify all possible ways of diverting offenders from crime to making Berwick a safer place to live work and visit.
