Crime Statistics Commentary

In the East Shields and Boldon area, our priority remains the prevention of house burglary and thefts from sheds and garages.

We continue to conduct both high profile and covert patrols and proactive policing operations are ongoing which includes the targeting of known offenders.

Most thieves are opportunistic - they look for an easy way to steal things that won't take long or arouse suspicion. Nearly a third of all house burglary in this area has been as a result of an opportunist thief who has tried a door handle or has found an open window. They will also look into gardens for sheds/garages with little or no security which makes it easy for a thief to strike.

Any property that is unlocked and insecure is far more likely to be targeted than one which is properly secured.

It is also advisable to security mark your property with postcodes and to record serial numbers of expensive items including bikes, iPods and Sat Navs.

If you are unfortunate and become a victim of theft, you will significantly increase the chance of having your property returned.
