Keep your car safe

Police are reminding residents not to leave valuables on display in their vehicles following recent crimes.

Officers are responding after two cars in the Jarrow area were targeted by thieves who smashed the window of two cars and in separate incidents grabbed a handbag and sports bag left lying on the seat.

Officers are carrying out extra foot patrols in the affected areas to deter criminals and are issuing crime prevention leaflets to drivers when they see cars parked with valuable items left inside.

Neighbourhood Inspector Ian King, for the Hebburn and Jarrow areas said: "We want to help drivers keep their valuables secure.  All too often our officers see portable sat nav's, mobile phones, briefcases, bags and laptops left behind.

"If you have a portable sat nav then remove the windscreen sucker and wipe away any tell tale signs which remain.  Remember, if a thief does get into your car then the glove compartment is the first place they'll look for something to steal."
