Crime Statistics Commentary

In the Riverside and West Shields Community Forum areas, crime is still down in excess of 9%.

The really concerning statistic is that in the Riverside and West In the Riverside and West Shields Community Forum areas, crime is still down in excess of 9%.

The number of shed burglaries has decreased again in the last 28 days while house burglaries were down to one in the last 10 days. The areas off Stanhope Road are the most targeted. We are working with South Tyneside Council’s Community Safety department to distribute advisory notices stating no goods of value are left in the shed or outhouse. Members of the public interested in a sign should contact the Neighbourhood Policing team at South Shields police station.

Theft from motor vehicles has started to rise. The public are again reminded to remove goods from display in their vehicles. We have had particular issues in streets off Stanhope Road and the area around South Tyneside College.  Valuables should not be left in your car when it's empty and vehicles should always be secured. There have been nine separate crimes where tools have been stolen from work vans parked outside their home addresses. We have been working with the community and partners increasing the number of patrols in the area at times when we have been told problems are more likely to happen. We also assisted the Community Safety Team with bike stamping and locks being given away to youths during April in Bents Park, Shields.

Bike thefts from gardens and sheds and those left insecure in public places can be prevented by using simple security steps such as a good quality lock. There were four instances of bikes being stolen from the seafront over the Easter period.

We rely on the help we get from our local communities who tell us where they are having problems as well as providing us with information which will help us tackle the issue. I actively encourage the use of the police website as a medium as well as seeking out your Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator if you feel more comfortable passing information in private.

We would urge people to always lock their windows and doors, even when at home.
