Neighbourhood priorities

Northumbria Police aims to meet our commitment to you.

The following Neighbourhood priorities relate to your area:

1. May 2012: House burglaries across the Coalfields area.

"What you told us"

Police received a number of reports of burglaries across the area.

"What we are doing about it ?"

An operation targeting known offenders and disrupting their activities has taken place across the Coalfields area and a number of warrants have been carried out. Local officers continue to monitor the situation however, the reports of burglary have decreased significantly.

"Keeping you informed"

The number of burglaries in the area reduced dramatically. However, we’re still urging people to be vigilant and report anything that looks out of the ordinary to police.

By taking simple precautions you can prevent the opportunist thief from having the chance to steal from your home.

  • Keep windows and doors locked when you go out and even when you're at home

  • Consider fitting an approved burglar alarm system

  • Take steps to ensure your home looks secure from the outside

  • If you go out in the evening, close curtains and set light timers

  • Consider fitting a letter-box cage to stop intruders reaching inside

  • Don't hide spare keys in the garage, shed or outside

  • If you store larger items such as bikes in a shed make sure they are secure, and use bike locks.

If you see it, report it. If you see any suspicious activity report it, no matter how small or insignificant you think it is you are NOT wasting our time. If you hear any information let your local neighbourhood office know.

More information about what police are doing can be found in the news section of the website or at our Police and Community Forums and Partners and Communities (PACT) meetings. To find out when the next meeting is in your area visit the events section.

"Keeping you informed"

3. May 2012: Increase in the theft of scrap metal and other metal objects across the area.

“What you told us”

There has been an increase in the theft of scrap metal and other metal objects across the area

“What are we doing about it ?”

  • A number of operations are continuing to operate in the Hetton and Houghton areas targeting scrap dealers and collectors operating outside of the law.  A vital part of this operation is working with partners in the council, including the environmental service enforcement team which provides a link to other agencies and a full joined up approach to enforcement.  Response shifts are being given a briefing around the offences being committed.

  • Extra patrols are being conducted around key times.

  • News releases and leaflet drops on areas affected have been issued to raise awareness around metal theft and prevention.

  • Other agencies are being enlisted to assist in targeted patrols.

“Keeping you informed”

Activity is ongoing and people are asked to contact police regarding any suspicious activity on 101, extension 69191.
