Neighbourhood priorities

Northumbria Police aims to meet our commitment to you.

The following Neighbourhood priorities relate to your area:

“What you told us”

There has been an increase in the number of reports of mobile phones and handbag thefts in the city centre.


“What are we doing about it?”

Extra patrols are being carried out in the city centre bars and clubs. Crime prevention messages have also been issued in local media.
 

"Keeping you informed"

There have been three people arrested and two charged with theft of phones from bags within the city centre. They have been both excluded from the city centre bars under the Pubwatch scheme.
The Neighbourhood teams have carried out a number of operations searching people as they enter various pubs and clubs.

Crime prevention messages have been published in the local papers and 1000 bag clips have been bought and are being distributed to students and revellers within the city to make it harder for the thieves to steal them.

There is an ongoing issue of drunken and rowdy behaviour in public places which has been raised in the Safer Communities Survey.

“What are we doing about it?”

There have been targeted uniform patrols, engagement and enforcement against those selling alcohol to young people. We have also worked closely with licensed premises to promote responsible drinking and deal with problem premises.

“Keeping you informed”

There have been 65 arrests for drunkenness and ten arrests for public disorder offences in the city centre. Five further people have been banned from using licensed premises in the city under the Pubwatch scheme. Neighbourhood officers have worked closely with door supervisors carrying out searches and preventing underage drinkers and trouble makers from entering the premises. Over 40 fake IDs have been seized from under 18s trying to gain entry to bars.
A number of articles have been issued in the local press with regards to the consequences of using false IDs.

Local businesses have raised concerns about an increase in shoplifting in the city centre, particularly around school holidays.

“What are we doing about it?”

This is a new neighbourhood priority. The Neighbourhood Policing Team will carry out regular patrols in the city centre to deter and target thieves working alongside local businesses.

“Keeping you informed”
