Neighbourhood priorities

Northumbria Police aims to meet our commitment to you.

The following Neighbourhood priorities relate to your area:

1. May 2013 – Scrap vehicles in the Sunderland West area

"What you told us"

There has been an increase in reports of vehicles collecting scrap within the Sunderland West area. Residents are concerned by the behaviour of scrap collectors who are entering private property and taking items without permission. Often passengers in the vehicles look into the rear yards by standing on the back of vans.

"What are we doing about it"

  • Operation Kilogram has been launched to provide a coordinated response with partners to address the problem.

  • Officers will carry out stop/checks on all vehicles carrying scrap to verify they have a Waste Carriers Licence and check the content of their load.

  • Individuals committing road traffic offences, carrying unsafe loads or those who have any vehicle defects will be proactively pursued.

"Keeping you informued"

The Neighbourhood Policing Team will continue to keep the community updated through local Partners and Community Together (PACT) meetings. More information about when they are held can be found in the events section of the website.
