For mobile phones, MP3 players, computers or any equipment with a serial number, report the loss at immobilise.com.
For bicycles, please report the loss at bikeregister.com.
Police forces and insurance companies nationwide search reports on both websites.
You can also use Report my loss. This isn't a police service and charges £5.95 for logging something as lost, but the service is searchable by forces nationwide and insurance companies.
You may wish to visit the police station nearest to where you think you lost the item to check if it's been handed in.
