FOI/2 - Fixed Penalty Notices

Thank you for your email received on the 31 January 2025 in which you made a request for access to certain information which may be held by Northumbria Police.

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and we provide a response for your attention.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Fixed Penalty Unit and the Corporate Department of Northumbria Police.  We can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.

We are able to disclose the located information to you as follows.

You asked:

In 2024, how many Fixed Penalties or Prosecutions were issued by your force for:

1 Cycling on a footpath or causeway by the side of any road made or set apart for the use or accommodation of foot passengers
2 Crossing a stop line when traffic lights are on red
3 Failing to stop at a stop line on a road junction
4 Cycling without appropriate lights between sunset and sunrise
5 Cycling without reflectors between sunset and sunrise
6 Cycling without legal brakes
7 Cycling while under the influence of alcohol or drugs

Can you also please break these figures down by individual area.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Criminal Justice Department of Northumbria Police. We can confirm that the information you have requested is not held by Northumbria Police.

Searches have revealed that there have been zero cyclists prosecuted/issued with a fixed penalty notice for the offences specified. However, it should be noted that words of warning may have been given by an officer for these offences.
