FOI/5 - Police Officer Misconduct

Thank you for your email received on the 3 February 2025 in which you made a request for access to certain information which may be held by Northumbria Police.

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of access to information held at the time of a request, by a Public Authority (including the Police), subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and we provide a response for your attention.

Following receipt of your request, searches were conducted with the Professional Standards, Corporate Communications and the Criminal Justice and Custody Departments of Northumbria Police.  We can confirm that the information you have requested is held by Northumbria Police.

We are able to disclose the located information to you as follows.

You asked:

1. What is the force’s policy on naming police officers charged with criminal offences?
2. If no local or national policy exists, what is the force’s official position on naming officers in such cases?

No information held.  There is no specific force policy relating to this matter.  However, the force follows the College of Policing guidance in relation to the naming of people charged with a criminal offence, and this can be found via the following link: Media relations | College of Policing.

3. Additionally, please provide copies of all press releases issued in 2024 concerning police officers charged with criminal offences.

No information held.  No such press releases were issued.

4. Finally, please provide the number of police officers and special constables charged or summoned to court between 1st January 2024 and 31st December 2024.
