Weapons seized and arrests made as part of clampdown on criminal activity in community

DSC_7627.jpgTwo days of dedicated action in an area of North Tyneside has seen 46 stop and searches, weapons seized and arrests made.

Earlier this month, officers from North Shields Neighbourhood Policing Team continued their clampdown on criminal activity with targeted action in the in the Meadow Well area by putting in place enhanced stop and search powers – a Section 60 – over a 48-hour period.

Across the two days, officers conducted 46 stop and searches and arrested three people for possession of offensive weapons and reported a further four people for drug-related offences.

Officers also recovered a butcher’s knife, believed to have been discarded when police were witnessed conducting checks.

A suspected stolen bike was also found.

Neighbourhood Inspector for the Meadow Well area Jen Bushby Said: “While this activity ultimately aims to proactively reduce the danger of knife crime and any related violence, it is an extension of the type of work we are doing year-round to engage with our communities and act on the information they share with us.

“What’s good about the two-days of intensified action is it that it not only builds upon the patrols and activity we already carry out, but the temporary use of increased powers allows us to further respond to what’s happening in an area at specific times.

“As a team, we’re really pleased with these results, and I want those living in the area to know we’re ready to respond and take those extra steps if needed.”

Insp Bushby added: “Having worked in our neighbourhood teams for six years, I know first-hand how committed and determined those officers are to ensuring these areas remain a safe and pleasant place to live.

“We take ownership, have pride and belief, and understand the complexities of the work we are doing.

“Your local neighbourhood team know their patch like the back of their hands – they’re totally immersed in the communities they serve – and I hope this activity, demonstrates just how invaluable those teams can be.

“The public are our eyes and ears in the community – please know that your intelligence is vital, and we will continue to take positive action to address any concerns reported to us.”

People can share information with police online or via 101. In an emergency, where someone is in immediate danger or a crime is being committed call 999.

The results of the activity come as we celebrate Neighbourhood Policing Week – which is designed to highlight the fantastic work completed everyday by these teams.
