Project Servator is a policing tactic that aims to disrupt criminality, including terrorism, while providing a visible presence of officers.
Project Servator officers are experienced and specially trained to spot the tell-tale signs that someone is planning or preparing to commit an act of crime, including terrorism.
The approach relies on police working with the community – businesses, partners and members of the public – to build a network of vigilance and encourage suspicious activity to be reported. In working together, we can continue to protect our streets and everyone who lives, works or visits here and make it difficult for criminals and terrorists to operate.
What will I see?
Our officers will arrive unannounced at various locations. These patrols could last for different lengths of time and involve varying numbers of officers.
You'll see, as a minimum, uniform officers, but we might also include other police resources, such as dog units or armed officers, depending on our specific requirements. You may not see our less visible measures, including plain-clothes officers.
We might also work with British Transport Police at transport hubs or Aviation Police at airports.
Officers will talk to the public, local businesses and private security staff to let them know what they're doing and remind them to be vigilant, trust their instincts and report anything they see or hear that doesn’t feel right.
You may also see posters on display boards and officers handing out leaflets explaining more about Project Servator.
Patrols are highly visible, but if you see our officers in your area, there's nothing to be concerned about. It's normal police activity and isn't linked to any specific intelligence about a threat to the area.
Working with the community is a vital part of making Project Servator a success, so if you have any questions, please feel free to talk to our officers.
What do I need to do?
You have an important role to play in helping to keep our streets safe by reporting anything that doesn't feel right, for example, an unattended item or someone acting suspiciously.
You’ll never get into trouble for reporting a genuine concern and we’ll always take your report seriously.
If you see something suspicious, please tell a police officer, use our Tell us about possible terrorist activity | Northumbria Police or call the confidential Anti Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789 321. If it's an emergency, always call 999.
You’ll find more information on what to look out for and how to report it at ACT (Action Counters Terrorism).
